Northern Lights in Dawson City

Dawson City sits where the Klondike River meets the Yukon River, at 64°N in the Yukon, about 530 km north of Whitehorse. Gold was found on Bonanza Creek in 1896, the town held 16,000 to 17,000 people by 1898 and stayed the territorial capital until 1953. It now has about 1,600 residents and very little light.

From the boardwalks, or up the Midnight Dome

The town’s own visitor guide puts it simply: step outside your hotel. The dark streets and wooden boardwalks are the usual viewing spot, and in a bar the advice is to listen for someone announcing that the lights are out.

For a wider horizon, the Midnight Dome is the hill directly above town, about 500 m higher, with a view over the Yukon and Klondike valleys to the Ogilvie Mountains. Dome Road reaches the top in 10 to 15 minutes’ drive, and the visitor association lists the viewpoint as open all year, though weather and conditions can restrict access. The winter aurora tours from town go up there.

Tombstone Territorial Park on the Dempster

The Dempster Highway leaves the Klondike Highway 40 km east of Dawson. Tombstone Territorial Park, jointly managed by the territory and the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in, runs from km 50.5 to km 115 of the Dempster, so its interpretive centre at km 71.5 is about 110 km from town. The centre and campground are summer only, but the road is kept open in winter and the park has snowshoe and ski trails. There is no food, fuel or phone coverage in the park.

The ice bridge to West Dawson, and Thaw di Gras

January averages −25.7 °C and the record low is −58.3 °C, set in February 1947. The George Black ferry links the town with West Dawson from May to October. Once the river freezes, usually late December or early January, the territorial government builds an ice bridge in its place, open to foot and vehicle traffic until April. In March the town holds Thaw di Gras, a spring carnival weekend with dog sled and skijor races, adult tricycle races and a log toss.

Dawson is the seat of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in government, and the townsite together with Tr’ochëk, the old fishing camp across the Klondike, became the Tr’ondëk-Klondike World Heritage Site in 2023.

Five hours up the Klondike Highway

The drive from Whitehorse is about 530 km; the visitor office quotes five to six hours depending on season and road conditions, and fuel and mobile coverage are limited along the way. Air North flies from Whitehorse through the winter to Dawson City Airport, 15 km east of town in the Klondike valley.
