Every night of 2026 in Quebec City, January at the top: how long it's dark, and the chance of aurora on a clear night.

Northern Lights in Quebec City

Quebec City is the capital of Quebec, its old town set on the cliffs of Cap Diamant above the St. Lawrence at 46.8°N, about 250 km downriver from Montreal. The aurora shows here only during geomagnetic storms. A faint glow low in the north can appear with a weaker one, but a display that rises clear of the city’s lights needs about a G2 moderate storm. Cloud is the other obstacle: November, the greyest month, gets about half the sunshine of March.

Île d’Orléans and the chemin Royal

The bridge from Beauport leads onto an island that is still mostly farmland, with the chemin Royal running round the shore. Sainte-Famille, on the north side about 30 km from Old Quebec, looks north-west across the channel to the Côte-de-Beaupré. Saint-François at the eastern tip, about 45 km away, puts the city’s glow behind you.

The Jacques-Cartier valley

Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier is about 50 km north off Route 175, and much darker. Its glacial valley is 550 m deep and runs roughly north to south, so from the valley floor you see the low northern sky only straight up the valley.

Vieux-Lévis, looking back at Old Quebec

The waterfront faces Old Quebec across the river, so the northern sky is above the city’s lights. It works only for a bright display. Photos from big storms have come from Vieux-Lévis and from Beauport on the north shore, and where the sky looks pale to the eye a phone in night mode picks up the colour. See how to photograph the aurora with an iPhone.
