Northern Lights in Syöte

Syöte is a small fell resort in the Pudasjärvi municipality of Northern Ostrobothnia, about 140 km northeast of Oulu and 55 km from Pudasjärvi center. Iso-Syöte, 432 m, is the southernmost fell in Finland, and a hotel stands on its summit. At 65.6°N it is about 100 km south of the Arctic Circle and nearly a degree of latitude south of Rovaniemi, so the aurora needs a little more activity to show here than it does in Lapland, and there is no polar night: at the solstice the sun is up for about three hours.

The north side of Iso-Syöte

The summit rises above the tree line and is the highest ground for a long way, so the view from the top is open in every direction, north included, and you can get up there on foot or by car. In winter the ski trail from the Hotel Iso-Syöte car park leads round to the north side of the fell, the side to watch from.

Syöte is one of the snowiest areas in Finland. Near the tree line on Iso-Syöte the spruces carry crown snow-load, tykky in Finnish, heavy enough to break some of them.

Pikku-Syöte, Teerivaara and the national park

Pikku-Syöte, 386 m, about 4 km from Iso-Syöte, is the resort’s second fell, with its own slopes and hotel. The Syöte visitor center is at the foot of Iso-Syöte, and next to it Teerivaara has a 4.5 km loop that is done on snowshoes in winter, with a day hut along the way.

Syöte National Park, founded in 2000, is about 300 km² in four separate blocks across Pudasjärvi, Posio and Taivalkoski, mostly old spruce forest and mires, with 122 km of marked trails. Many of the routes start from the visitor center.

Two hours from Oulu

Oulu has the nearest airport and railway station; the drive takes about two hours via Pudasjärvi, and airport transfers 1.5 to 2 hours. Kuusamo airport is about 1.5 hours away and Rovaniemi about 2. Without a car, the Oulu to Kuusamo coaches stop at Pudasjärvi, where local buses continue to Syötekylä and the Iso-Syöte area.
