Northern Lights in Minneapolis

Minneapolis and St. Paul sit at 45°N on the upper Mississippi, with about 3.7 million people in the metro area. They get the aurora a few times in an active year, usually as a glow or a low arc over the northern suburbs; a display overhead is still a storm event. Minnesota gets steadily better the further north you drive, and Duluth, about 150 miles up the interstate, sees it on many more nights.

The metro glow and the northern suburbs

For color overhead from inside the metro it takes about a G3 strong geomagnetic storm, around Kp 7. A step or two down, a faint glow or red tint can sit low on the northern horizon from the northern suburbs.

In the strongest storms it has been visible to the eye above the Twin Cities, and photographed from Minneapolis and St. Paul and from suburbs all around the metro, Plymouth to Cottage Grove, Stillwater and Rosemount. Phone cameras in night mode pick up color the eye does not, so the sky may look gray while the photo comes out pink and green; see how to photograph the aurora with an iPhone.

The St. Croix River and Mille Lacs Lake

William O’Brien State Park, on the St. Croix River near Marine on St. Croix, is about 45 minutes north-east, with campsites and camper cabins for staying late. Afton State Park, about 20 miles east of St. Paul on the same river, is closer but nearer the city glow. Both parks close at night unless you are camping.

Mille Lacs Lake is about 80 miles north. It has some 200 square miles of open water, so from the south shore you look north with nothing in the way, and the aurora has been photographed over the lake.

Voyageurs and the Boundary Waters

Voyageurs National Park on the Canadian border and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness near Ely are both certified dark-sky places, four to five hours north.
