Northern Lights in Edmonton

Edmonton, at 53.5°N, is the northernmost city in North America with more than a million people, 280 km north of Calgary in Alberta. Those extra two and a half degrees of latitude matter. A G1 minor storm that gives Calgary a glow on the horizon can put a proper arc up the sky over Edmonton’s outskirts, and a G2 moderate storm is enough for a good show from the edge of the city. On big nights it has been photographed from downtown.

AuroraWatch: Edmonton’s own aurora alert

The University of Alberta’s physics department runs AuroraWatch.ca, a real-time monitor of geomagnetic activity for the Edmonton area. It reads a magnetometer just outside the city rather than a global forecast, so it reacts to what is happening over Alberta right now. Alerts go out by free email: yellow when the probability of aurora is more than 50%, red when it is more than 70%.

Elk Island and the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve

The usual drive is east on the Yellowhead Highway to Elk Island National Park, about 50 km from downtown, open around the clock all year, with park fees. It lies inside the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve, designated in 2006, which covers about 300 km² and also takes in the Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area to the south. The preserve lists the Astotin Lake area in Elk Island as a viewing area. The park posts temporary area closures for wildlife, so check its bulletins before a night drive, and go slowly on the park road, because bison roam freely.

A faint arc at the edge of the glow can look grey to the eye, while a phone in night mode shows the colour. See photographing the aurora with an iPhone.
