Northern Lights in Enontekiö
Enontekiö is the municipality that forms Finland’s north-western “arm”: about 8,400 square kilometers with fewer than 1,800 people in it, the second-lowest population density in the country. About a fifth of the residents are Sámi. The main village is Hetta, about 500 people on the north shore of Lake Ounasjärvi. There is no town anywhere near, so the sky is dark from the edge of the village, and from about 6 December to 6 January the sun does not rise at all.
Lake Ounasjärvi and the Hetta-Pallas trail
In winter you can walk or ski straight out of the village onto the ice of Lake Ounasjärvi and have open sky in every direction, with the Ounastunturi fells to the south. In summer a boat takes hikers across the same water to the start of the Hetta-Pallas trail, about 50 km over the fells to the Pallastunturi visitor center. It was marked in 1934 and is the oldest marked hiking trail in Finland. Summer hikers go over the tops; the winter ski route runs mostly lower down.
Jyppyrä above the village
Jyppyrä is the hill next to Hetta. A marked trail from the Fell Lapland Visitor Centre, 1.8 km there and back, leads to a campfire hut on top that looks across the lake to Pyhäkero in the Ounastunturi fells. The 10 km ski track around the village is lit, so step off it when you are watching.
Charter flights and the road from Palojoensuu
Enontekiö Airport is a few kilometers west of Hetta and has been run by the municipality since 2021. It handles winter charter flights, mainly from Britain, and has no year-round scheduled service, so most independent visitors fly to Kittilä, about 150 km south by road, or to Alta in Norway, about 200 km north. Hetta is 25 km off the E8 at Palojoensuu, and buses from Kittilä and Rovaniemi come up through Muonio.
Kilpisjärvi is in the same municipality but about 170 km away by road, up the E8 toward Norway.
Hetta in daylight
The Fell Lapland Visitor Centre has the Vuovjjuš exhibition on Sámi culture and fell nature. Enontekiö Church, finished in 1952, replaced the church burned in 1944; its altarpiece by Uuno Eskola shows the risen Christ blessing the people of Lapland. In March the village holds Marianpäivät, the Mary’s Day gathering of the Sámi of Enontekiö, with reindeer sleigh races, lassoing, Sámi music and art exhibitions; it has run in its present form since 1971.
FAQ
Can you see the northern lights in Hetta?
Yes, and from the village itself. Hetta has about 500 people and no town for a long way in any direction, so the only light is the street lighting and the 10 km lit ski track. Walk onto the ice of Lake Ounasjärvi in winter for open sky all round, or take the short Jyppyrä trail from the Fell Lapland Visitor Centre to the campfire spot on top. The sun does not rise from about 6 December to 6 January, which gives the longest dark hours.
How do you get to Hetta without a charter flight?
Fly to Kittilä, about 150 km south, and rent a car or take the bus, which comes up through Muonio and Palojoensuu. The nearest railway station is at Kolari, about 150 km south, and Rovaniemi is over 300 km away by road. Alta in Norway is about 200 km north. Enontekiö's own airport, just west of Hetta, has winter charter flights mainly from Britain but no year-round scheduled service.
What is Marianpäivät in Hetta?
Marianpäivät, or Mary's Days, is the gathering of the Sámi of Enontekiö held in Hetta in March, with reindeer sleigh races, lassoing, Sámi music and art exhibitions. In its present form it has been held since 1971. March nights are still dark enough for the aurora, so the festival weekend is a reasonable time to combine the two.
Is Kilpisjärvi part of Enontekiö?
Yes. Kilpisjärvi is in the far north-west corner of the same municipality, about 170 km from Hetta by road along the E8 toward Norway. Hetta is forest and lake at the foot of the Ounastunturi fells; Kilpisjärvi is high fell country under Saana with the three-country cairn nearby. Both are far from any town, so the choice is about landscape and access rather than darkness.
When is the best time to see the northern lights in Enontekiö?
The aurora season in Enontekiö runs from late August to mid-April, when the nights get dark. Your best chances are from September to November, and again from January to March, when the aurora shows on most clear nights. The longest nights, around 21 December, have about 16 hours of darkness.
Can you see the northern lights in Enontekiö in summer?
No. From early May to early August the nights in Enontekiö stay light, and the midnight sun lasts from late May to mid-July. The aurora is still there, but the sky is too bright to see it.
What Kp index do I need to see the northern lights in Enontekiö?
In Enontekiö, you usually need at least Kp 1 to have a reasonable chance of seeing the northern lights. Lower Kp can still bring a faint aurora display low on the northern horizon, but it is less common.
This is based on magnetic latitude, and Kp index is a global geomagnetic index, so treat it as a rule of thumb, not a location-specific guarantee.
Tonight, the NOAA Kp index forecast is 1.3 to 1.7. That is around the usual Kp index threshold for Enontekiö, so you might have a chance of seeing the aurora if the sky is clear and dark.
