Northern Lights in Kittilä
Kittilä is the center of one of the largest municipalities in Finland by area, a village of about 2,200 people on the Ounasjoki river in western Lapland, roughly 120 km north of the Arctic Circle. Most people who fly in here are heading 20 km north to the Levi ski resort and never see the village. Kittilä itself is a quieter and darker place to stay under the same sky.
Kittilä Airport, 5 km up the Levi road
Kittilä Airport (KTT) is 5 km north of the village center on the road to Levi. Finnair flies from Helsinki all year, with direct flights from several European cities in winter. Levi is about 15 km from the terminal and Ylläs 35 to 50 km west, depending on the village, and airport buses run to both. By road, Kittilä is about 150 km north of Rovaniemi on Highway 79, around two hours’ drive, with buses between the two.
The Ounasjoki and the fells to the west
The village is strung along the river and the main road, and the lights thin out quickly beyond the center. Karinnokka, a laavu (lean-to shelter) with a fireplace on the Ounasjoki in the church village, has the river and Levi fell in view. The Ounasjoki runs through the municipality almost north to south, and away from the village its valley is open and unlit.
West of the village, Totovaara is the nearest trailhead into Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Aakenustunturi, 565 m at its highest point, has marked trails from the Totovaara parking area and a ski track around it in winter. Further out, the Pallas visitor center and fell hotel are about an hour’s drive north-west of the airport, under Taivaskero, which rises to just over 800 m.
Pokka and a short polar night
Kittilä is far enough north for a polar night, but only just: the sun stays below the horizon for roughly two weeks around the winter solstice, and there are still a few hours of light at midday. Pokka, a hamlet on the road from Kittilä to Inari, recorded Finland’s official low of −51.5 °C on 28 January 1999.
Engel’s church and the painters’ houses
The wooden church, designed by Carl Ludvig Engel and finished in 1831, is the oldest building in Kittilä and one of the few that survived when retreating German troops burned the village in 1944. The Palsa Museum in the village is the home of the painter Kalervo Palsa. At Kaukonen, about 30 km south by road, the Särestöniemi Museum is the farm and studios of the painter Reidar Särestöniemi.
FAQ
Is it better to stay in Kittilä or Levi for the northern lights?
The sky is the same: Kittilä village and Levi are only about 20 km apart. Levi is a resort with its own light, but also with fell-top viewpoints a short drive from the hotels. Kittilä is a working village on the Ounasjoki with fewer lights, a lean-to shelter on the river, and the airport 5 km away. If you want ski lifts and restaurants in the evening, stay in Levi; if you want a quiet dark village, Kittilä does that.
How far is Kittilä Airport from Levi and Ylläs?
Levi is about 15 km from Kittilä Airport, a drive of around 15 to 20 minutes. Ylläs is 35 to 50 km west, depending on the village, under an hour. Kittilä village is 5 km south of the airport. Airport buses run to Levi and to both Ylläs villages, and Finnair flies from Helsinki all year, with direct winter flights from several European cities on top.
Does Kittilä have a polar night?
Yes, but a short one. Kittilä is just far enough north that the sun does not rise for roughly two weeks around the winter solstice, in the second half of December. Midday is still light, with a long blue dusk, and the ski slopes stay open. Ivalo, about a degree of latitude further north, has about 40 days of polar night.
How cold does Kittilä get in winter?
Finland's official record low, −51.5 °C, was measured at Pokka in Kittilä municipality on 28 January 1999. Pokka is a hamlet on the road from Kittilä to Inari. Nights like that are rare, but the climate is subarctic, with about 131 cm of snowfall in an average year.
When is the best time to see the northern lights in Kittilä?
The aurora season in Kittilä runs from late August to mid-April, when the nights get dark. Your best chances are from September to November, and again in February and March, when the aurora shows on many clear nights. The longest nights, around 21 December, have about 16 hours of darkness.
Can you see the northern lights in Kittilä in summer?
No. From early May to early August the nights in Kittilä stay light, and the midnight sun lasts from late May to mid-July. The aurora is still there, but the sky is too bright to see it.
What Kp index do I need to see the northern lights in Kittilä?
In Kittilä, you usually need at least Kp 1 to have a reasonable chance of seeing the northern lights. Lower Kp can still bring a faint aurora display low on the northern horizon, but it is less common.
This is based on magnetic latitude, and Kp index is a global geomagnetic index, so treat it as a rule of thumb, not a location-specific guarantee.
Tonight, the NOAA Kp index forecast is 1.3 to 1.7. That is around the usual Kp index threshold for Kittilä, so you might have a chance of seeing the aurora if the sky is clear and dark.
