Northern Lights in Kajaani
Kajaani is a town of about 36,000 at 64.2°N, capital of Kainuu, at the south-eastern end of Lake Oulujärvi, about 190 km south-east of Oulu by road. A G1 minor storm, the lowest step on the NOAA scale, puts the lights overhead here. Activity a step or two below that gives an arc or glow low in the north, and that is where the lake comes in.
The Paltaniemi breakwater on Oulujärvi
Oulujärvi is the fifth-largest lake in Finland, known as the Kainuu Sea. Kajaani’s watching place is Paltaniemi, a village about 9 km north of the center on a headland on the southern shore of the lake’s Paltaselkä basin, 28 km long and 10 km across. From the beach and marina the view runs straight north over the water, or the ice in winter, with nothing in it. A viewing platform with fixed loungers stands on the breakwater, built for exactly this; park at the harbor lot. The village church of 1726 has painted ceilings from 1778 to 1781, and Kajaani Airport, with Finnair flights to Helsinki, is on the village’s eastern edge, 7 km from town.
If a low arc over the lake looks gray to you, check a phone photo before you give up: night mode brings out color the eye misses, and the site has a guide to photographing the aurora with an iPhone.
Vuokatti and Hossa, east of Kajaani
Vuokatti, the ski resort in Sotkamo about 35 km east, has slopes on the Vuokatinvaara ridge and Nuasjärvi at its foot, and the Oulu paper Kaleva has run reader photos of the aurora taken there. Hossa National Park is about 200 km north-east, off the Kuusamo road.
FAQ
Where do people in Kajaani go to watch the northern lights?
Paltaniemi, the village about 9 km north of the center on the shore of Lake Oulujärvi. The beach and marina look straight north over the lake's Paltaselkä basin, about 10 km of open water or ice to the far shore, and there is a viewing platform with fixed loungers on the breakwater, built because local photographers asked for it. Park at the harbor lot and walk out to the tip of the breakwater.
Can you see the northern lights from Vuokatti?
Yes. Vuokatti is about 35 km east of Kajaani at roughly the same latitude, and the Oulu paper Kaleva has published reader photos of the aurora taken there. Nuasjärvi, the lake at the foot of the ski hill, gives an open view away from the resort lights, which matters on the nights when the display stays low in the north.
Is Kajaani far enough north to see the northern lights?
Yes, with a caveat. At 64.2°N Kajaani is about 260 km south of the Arctic Circle, so faint activity stays low on the northern horizon, and that is why the flat view north over Oulujärvi from Paltaniemi matters. A G1 minor storm, the weakest class on the NOAA scale, is enough to put the lights overhead here, where Helsinki at 60°N would still see only a glow in the north.
When is the best time to see the northern lights in Kajaani?
The aurora season in Kajaani runs from mid-August to late April, when the nights get dark. Your best chances are in October, and again in February and March, when the aurora shows on some clear nights. The longest nights, around 21 December, have about 15 hours of darkness.
Can you see the northern lights in Kajaani in summer?
No. From mid-May to late July the nights in Kajaani stay light. The aurora is still there, but the sky is too bright to see it.
What Kp index do I need to see the northern lights in Kajaani?
In Kajaani, you usually need at least Kp 3 to have a reasonable chance of seeing the northern lights. Lower Kp can still bring a faint aurora display low on the northern horizon, but it is less common.
This is based on magnetic latitude, and Kp index is a global geomagnetic index, so treat it as a rule of thumb, not a location-specific guarantee.
Tonight, the NOAA Kp index forecast is 1.3 to 1.7. That is below the usual Kp index threshold for Kajaani, so seeing the aurora is unlikely.
