Northern Lights in Bergen

Bergen sits at 60.4°N on Byfjorden in western Norway, ringed by its city mountains and three degrees of latitude south of Trondheim. When the aurora shows here it is usually low in the north, and the weather decides more than the sun does: the city station averages about 2,500 mm of precipitation a year, over around 200 wet days. An active night, still short of a G1 minor storm on the NOAA scale, can put a glow on the northern horizon for anyone on high ground or out on the islands. It takes a real storm to bring it over the city.

Crowds on Nordnes and pink on the camera

On the strong nights Bergens Tidende runs readers’ photos from all over town: from Nordnes, where crowds have gathered, from Damgårdssundet, Åsane, Loddefjord and Indre Arna, and from Løvstakken above the streets. Several of those nights came out pink and red on camera, and a University of Bergen researcher told the paper why: the eye is most sensitive to green, so reds and purples that look faint in person come through in photos. Phone night modes do the same; see how to photograph the aurora with an iPhone.

Fløyen by funicular, Ulriken by cable car

The Fløibanen funicular climbs from the center to 320 m and runs late every evening. It gets you above the streets without a car, but the city is still right below; paths lead on through the forest to Rundemanen, 568 m, further from the lights. Ulriken, 643 m, the highest of the city mountains, is about 4 km south-east of the center. The cable car goes up, or there are 1,333 stone steps from Montana, slippery in winter.

Across the water to Askøy, Øygarden and Nordhordland

West across the fjord on Askøy and Øygarden, Follese and Straume are about 20 minutes’ drive, and Herdla, the low island at Askøy’s northern tip, is about 45 minutes. Readers have also sent photos from the Herdlesund bridge. Holsnøy and Radøy in Nordhordland are 40 minutes to an hour north.
