Northern Lights in Oslo

Oslo sits at the head of the Oslofjord at just under 60°N, nearly ten degrees of latitude south of Tromsø and the rest of Norway’s aurora country, with the forested hills of the Marka rising along its northern edge. When the aurora reaches Oslo it is almost always a low band on the northern horizon, and the Norwegian Space Centre’s Pål Brekke has told Avisa Oslo that it is not common this far south in Norway. A faint arc in the north can show on a moderately active night; a G1 minor storm or a G2 moderate storm is what puts color over the city. That happens a few nights a year around the peak of the sun’s 11-year cycle, and sometimes not at all for several years in between.

On those nights Avisa Oslo and VG have run readers’ photos from all over town, from Grünerløkka, Bislett and Nordstrand to Røa and Holmenkollen. Phone cameras in night mode pick up color the eye does not, and a couple at Tryvannstårnet told Avisa Oslo their phone photos showed more than their eyes did. See the guide to photographing the aurora with an iPhone.

The Holmenkollen Line up to Frognerseteren and Tryvann

The Holmenkollen Line ends at Frognerseteren, 469 m up and 14 km from Stortinget, about 25 minutes from the center. Tryvann lake and the television tower are a walk away at the entrance to Nordmarka, with the city lights below you and to the south and forest to the north. The Sognsvann Line is the quicker trip, ending at Sognsvann, a lake just north of the city at 183 m with a trail around it.

Further east, Maridalen, the farmed valley around Maridalsvannet above Kjelsås, is a bus ride from Nydalen.

Harestua’s old solar observatory

Harestua, about 35 km north in Lunner, is where the old solar observatory stands at 580 m. It opened in 1954 and is a protected monument, open only for occasional courses and events; aurora watchers come for the dark country around it.
