Northern Lights in Vardø
Vardø is Norway’s easternmost town, a fishing port of about 1,700 people on the island of Vardøya off the tip of the Varanger Peninsula, at 70.4°N and 31°E, further east than Istanbul. The island is treeless, with the open Barents Sea to the north and east, so nothing on the horizon blocks the aurora. The weather does: Vardø is unsheltered, and Arctic storms off the sea are a regular part of winter here. The polar night lasts from about 24 November to 19 January.
Kiberg, Domen and the winter-closed road to Hamningberg
On the island, the shore looks out over open sea, and the white dome of the Globus radar station on the hill above town makes an unusual foreground.
Across the subsea tunnel on the mainland, the E75 runs south past Domen, a flat-topped 164 m hill on the coast, to the village of Kiberg about 10 km from town. Kibergsneset, just east of the village, is the easternmost point of the Norwegian mainland.
North of the tunnel, the coast road runs past Smelror toward Hamningberg, about 40 km away, an abandoned fishing village that survived the burning of Finnmark in 1944 and was emptied in 1964. The stretch from Smelror to Hamningberg is part of the Varanger National Tourist Route and is closed in winter, usually from November or December until April or May.
Vardøhus Fortress and the Steilneset Memorial
There has been a fortress on the island since the early 1300s, and Vardøhus Fortress is still run by the Royal Norwegian Navy. On the first day the sun comes back after the polar night, the fortress fires a salute and the town’s schoolchildren get the rest of the day off.
The Steilneset Memorial, opened in 2011, remembers the 91 people executed in the 17th-century Finnmark witch trials. Peter Zumthor’s long wooden hall has 91 small windows, each with a single bulb, and Louise Bourgeois’s glass and steel pavilion next to it holds a chair with flames rising through its seat.
Eiders and the Hornøya bird cliff in late winter
In late winter, birders come for the king eiders and Steller’s eiders. Hornøya, a bird cliff island a short boat ride from the harbor and the easternmost point of Norway, fills with seabirds from March.
The Hurtigruten stop and the Vardø Tunnel
The Vardø Tunnel, opened in 1982, runs 2.9 km under the Bussesundet strait and was Norway’s first subsea road tunnel. Vardø Airport is at Svartnes, at the mainland end of the tunnel, with small planes to Kirkenes and other towns in Finnmark. Hurtigruten ships call every day. By road, the E75 is the only way in.
FAQ
Can you see the northern lights in Vardø?
Yes. At 70.4°N, Vardø is far enough north that the aurora is often high overhead on clear, dark nights, and the treeless island has open sea to the north and east. The weather is the limiting factor, since the island is fully exposed to the Barents Sea. The polar night, from about 24 November to 19 January, gives the longest dark evenings.
Can you drive to Hamningberg in winter?
No. The road from Smelror, north of Vardø, to Hamningberg is closed for the winter, usually from November or December until April or May. Hamningberg is about 40 km from Vardø, an abandoned fishing village that was not burned in 1944. In the aurora season you can still drive the coast road as far as Smelror.
What is the Steilneset Memorial in Vardø?
It is a memorial to the 91 people executed in the 17th-century Finnmark witch trials, opened by Queen Sonja in 2011. Architect Peter Zumthor designed a long wooden hall with 91 windows, each lit by a single bulb, and artist Louise Bourgeois made the pavilion beside it, with a chair and flames inside.
How do you get to Vardø?
Vardø is on an island, linked to the mainland by the 2.9 km Vardø Tunnel under the sea. The E75 ends here. Vardø Airport is at Svartnes, at the mainland end of the tunnel, with Widerøe flights to Kirkenes and other Finnmark towns, and Hurtigruten ships call every day.
What happens in Vardø when the sun returns?
On the first day the sun is seen again after the polar night, Vardøhus Fortress fires a two-round salute and the town's schoolchildren get the rest of the day off. The fortress, which the Royal Norwegian Navy still runs, also has a museum open to visitors.
When is the best time to see the northern lights in Vardø?
The aurora season in Vardø runs from early September to early April, when the nights get dark. Your best chances are from September to March, when the aurora shows on most clear nights. The longest nights, around 21 December, have about 16 hours of darkness.
Can you see the northern lights in Vardø in summer?
No. From late April to mid-August the nights in Vardø stay light, and the midnight sun lasts from mid-May to late July. The aurora is still there, but the sky is too bright to see it.
What Kp index do I need to see the northern lights in Vardø?
In Vardø, even quiet geomagnetic conditions can be enough for aurora overhead.
This is based on magnetic latitude, and Kp index is a global geomagnetic index, so treat it as a rule of thumb, not a location-specific guarantee.
Tonight, the NOAA Kp index forecast is 1.3 to 1.7. That is above the usual Kp index threshold for Vardø, so you have a chance of seeing the aurora if the sky is clear.
