Northern Lights in Ivalo
Ivalo is the main village of Inari municipality in northern Lapland, on the Ivalojoki river where Highway 4 (the E75) crosses it, about 230 km north of the Arctic Circle. Around 3,000 people live here, which makes it the biggest village in the municipality and the one with the shops and the airport. Most aurora visitors who land here carry on to Saariselkä, 30 km south, or Inari, 40 km north.
Ivalo Airport at Törmänen
Ivalo Airport (IVL) is in Törmänen, a 10-minute drive south of the village, and is the northernmost airport in Finland and the EU. Finnair flies here from Helsinki all year, and winter adds direct flights from several European cities. An airport bus runs to Saariselkä and Kiilopää in connection with the flights.
Without flying, take the night train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi and the bus from the station, about four hours up Highway 4.
The Ivalojoki, Lake Inari and Nellim
The street lights follow the main road, and the dark starts a few minutes’ walk from the roundabout.
- The Ivalojoki banks. The river runs through the village and its banks are the nearest open sky to the center.
- Lake Inari. The Ivalojoki empties into the lake a little over 10 km north-east of the village. Finland’s third-largest lake normally freezes from November until early June, so for most of the aurora season it is one flat, unlit horizon.
- Nellim. A Skolt Sámi and Inari Sámi village on the south-eastern shore of Lake Inari, about 42 km north-east of Ivalo by road and 9 km from the Russian border, with a small wooden Orthodox church.
- Kaunispää. The fell above Saariselkä, 30 km south, has a road to its 438 m top, which puts you above the valley mist.
Kaamos, and Lake Inari before the ice
The polar night in Ivalo lasts about 40 days, from the start of December until the sun comes back around 9 January. At the other end of the season the nights are dark enough again from late August, and the lake stays open until November, so September and October give reflections that the frozen months do not.
Gold on the Ivalojoki and a village rebuilt after 1944
The Ivalojoki had a gold rush in the 1870s, and a few panners still work the river upstream. Retreating German troops burned the village in 1944 and the center was rebuilt after the war, so there are no old buildings to look at. Spruce stops growing about 10 km north of the village, and the land toward Inari is pine, birch and open bog.
FAQ
Can you see the northern lights from Ivalo village?
Yes. Ivalo is about 230 km north of the Arctic Circle and the village is small, so on an active night the aurora shows over the rooftops. For fainter displays walk to the Ivalojoki banks, a few minutes from the center, or drive north-east to the shore of Lake Inari, which is frozen and unlit for most of the season.
Nellim, 42 km north-east on the lake, is darker still.
Is Ivalo or Saariselkä better for the northern lights?
They are 30 km apart at the same latitude, so the sky is the same. Saariselkä is a resort with the Kaunispää fell road and the aurora trail into Urho Kekkonen National Park on its doorstep. Ivalo is the working village with the shops, the river and the airport, and Lake Inari is closer. The airport sits between the two, a 10-minute drive from Ivalo and about 25 minutes from Saariselkä.
When is the polar night in Ivalo?
The sun stays below the horizon in Ivalo for about 40 days, from the first days of December until around 9 January. It is not dark all day: there is blue twilight for a few hours around midday, and the aurora can be seen from mid-afternoon on an active day. The longest dark hours of the season are in these weeks.
How do you get from Ivalo Airport to Saariselkä and Inari?
Ivalo Airport is in Törmänen, 10 minutes south of Ivalo village. Saariselkä is about 25 km south of the airport and Inari about 50 minutes north. An airport bus runs to Saariselkä and Kiilopää in connection with the flights. For Inari it is a taxi, a rental car or the Highway 4 buses that pass through Ivalo.
When is the best time to see the northern lights in Ivalo?
The aurora season in Ivalo runs from late August to mid-April, when the nights get dark. Your best chances are from September to November, and again from January to March, when the aurora shows on most clear nights. The longest nights, around 21 December, have about 16 hours of darkness.
Can you see the northern lights in Ivalo in summer?
No. From early May to early August the nights in Ivalo stay light, and the midnight sun lasts from late May to mid-July. The aurora is still there, but the sky is too bright to see it.
What Kp index do I need to see the northern lights in Ivalo?
In Ivalo, you usually need at least Kp 1 to have a reasonable chance of seeing the northern lights. Lower Kp can still bring a faint aurora display low on the northern horizon, but it is less common.
This is based on magnetic latitude, and Kp index is a global geomagnetic index, so treat it as a rule of thumb, not a location-specific guarantee.
Tonight, the NOAA Kp index forecast is 1.3 to 1.7. That is around the usual Kp index threshold for Ivalo, so you might have a chance of seeing the aurora if the sky is clear and dark.
