Northern Lights in Iqaluit
Iqaluit is the capital of Nunavut, a city of about 7,400 people on the hills above Koojesse Inlet at the head of Frobisher Bay, on Baffin Island. In Inuktitut the northern lights are aqsarniit, from the root for playing ball.
Why the aurora can be in the southern sky
Iqaluit lies at 63.75°N, but its geomagnetic latitude is about 73°, north of where the aurora usually sits around midnight on an average night (about 67°). So the main band can lie south of town as well as north of it, and the whole sky is worth watching.
Apex, Sylvia Grinnell and the Road to Nowhere
- Apex (Niaqunngut), about 5 km south-east of the centre, is where the Hudson’s Bay Company set up in 1949. It has a beach on Frobisher Bay and the old company buildings; Nunatsiaq News has published an aurora photo taken over one of them. It is a taxi ride, or 5 km on foot along the Apex Trail. One of the company buildings was moved into town and is the Nunatta Sunakkutaangit Museum, with the Unikkaarvik Visitor Centre next door.
- Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park starts about 1 km west of town, an easy 30-minute walk. It is open tundra along the Sylvia Grinnell River, with a viewing platform over the falls. Caribou, Arctic fox and polar bear are all recorded in the park.
- The Road to Nowhere leaves the Apex Road and climbs out of town as a gravel track, ending a little over 3.5 km later at the shooting range, with Iqaluit out of sight behind the hills.
Four-hour December days
There is no polar night, but the shortest day lasts about four hours twenty minutes. December is also the dullest month, with about 13 hours of sunshine in total on average, against 94 in February and 172 in March. February is the coldest month at −27 °C on average, and the wind chill record is −66.4, set in February.
Toonik Tyme in April, and the frozen bay
Toonik Tyme, an April festival first held in 1965 to mark the end of winter, brings igloo building, snowmobile races, Inuit games and ice golf. The name comes from the Tuniit, the people archaeologists call the Dorset. In spring the frozen bay is used for dog sledding, kite-skiing and snowmobiling, and outfitters go out to Qaummaarviit Territorial Park, a small island about 12 km away with Thule remains.
No road in, three hours from Ottawa
No road links Iqaluit with the rest of Canada. Canadian North flies from Ottawa in a little over three hours, and from Yellowknife and Rankin Inlet.
FAQ
Why should you watch the southern sky for the northern lights in Iqaluit?
Because Iqaluit is closer to the geomagnetic pole than its 63.75°N suggests. Its geomagnetic latitude is about 73°, while on an average night the aurora usually sits near 67° around midnight, so the main band can pass south of town rather than north of it. It pays to watch the whole sky here, not just the northern horizon.
Where can you watch the northern lights in Iqaluit without a car?
Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park is about 1 km west of town, an easy 30-minute walk. Apex, on Frobisher Bay about 5 km south-east of the centre, is 5 km on foot along the Apex Trail, or a short taxi ride. The Road to Nowhere starts on the Apex Road and climbs out of town, and as soon as it turns at the edge of the community, Iqaluit is out of sight.
How many hours of daylight does Iqaluit get in December?
About four hours twenty minutes on the shortest day. Iqaluit is south of the Arctic Circle, so the sun does rise every day of the year. December also gets the least sunshine, about 13 hours in total on average, against 94 in February and 172 in March.
Can you drive to Iqaluit?
No. There is no road to Iqaluit from anywhere else in Canada, and the local roads stop a short way past the city limits. Canadian North flies from Ottawa in a little over three hours, and from Yellowknife and Rankin Inlet. Ships reach the town only when the bay is free of ice, roughly July to October, so for the rest of the year the plane is the only way in.
When is the best time to see the northern lights in Iqaluit?
The aurora season in Iqaluit runs from mid-August to late April, when the nights get dark. Your best chances are from September to April, when the aurora shows on most clear nights. The longest nights, around 21 December, have about 15 hours of darkness.
Can you see the northern lights in Iqaluit in summer?
No. From late May to late July the nights in Iqaluit stay light. The aurora is still there, but the sky is too bright to see it.
What Kp index do I need to see the northern lights in Iqaluit?
In Iqaluit, even quiet geomagnetic conditions can be enough for aurora overhead.
This is based on magnetic latitude, and Kp index is a global geomagnetic index, so treat it as a rule of thumb, not a location-specific guarantee.
Tonight, the NOAA Kp index forecast is 1.3 to 1.7. That is above the usual Kp index threshold for Iqaluit, so you have a chance of seeing the aurora if the sky is clear.
