Northern Lights in Scotland

Best Time to See the Northern Lights in Scotland

Go between September and March, and head as far north as you can. In Shetland and Orkney the aurora shows several times in a typical winter. The north coast of the mainland, the Highlands around Inverness and Skye see it a little less often, and Edinburgh and Glasgow only in strong storms, a few nights a year. In Shetland there are no dark nights from mid-May to late July, the simmer dim. The aurora is usually low in the north, and on the coasts the cloud often decides.
