Northern Lights in the United Kingdom

Best Time to See the Northern Lights in the United Kingdom

Your best chances are in the far north of Scotland, where Shetland and Orkney see the aurora several times in a typical winter. Further south it takes a strong storm: Northern Ireland and northern England see it on a few nights a year, and southern England only in the biggest storms.

Go between September and March. The aurora is usually low in the northern sky, so find a dark spot with a clear view north, such as Kielder in Northumberland, and watch the cloud forecast.
